Eco Survey Diver.
Pre-requisites - PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent, Eco-Foundation Diver, Eco-Research Diver + 20 logged dives

The Eco Survey Diver course takes your underwater scientific discovery to the next level. Using a whole range of underwater surveying techniques, over another four dives, you will refine your underwater survey techniques, culminating in a full survey of a local underwater environment.

By completing this course you will have opened the doors to carrying out underwater survey work in many exciting locations all over the globe.

Dives during the survey diving course will cover the following skills:

Dive 1 - Grid set up (surface), deployment and survey (including surface practice)
Procedures for setting up grid prior to dive and deployment in the water. Once set up, grid survey techniques can be practiced for the duration of the dive.

  • Underwater grid setup
  • Visual estimation of benthic cover in each of 25 squares/centre and 4 corners
  • Species counts in each of squares/centre and 4 corners
  • Grid retrieval

Dive 2 – Photography Dive
Using photography to enhance your surveys

  • Photo transects
  • Photo grid survey
  • Photo analysis (surface)

Dive 3 – Videography Dive
Using videography to enhance your surveys

  • Video transects
  • Video fish counts
  • Video analysis (surface)

Dive 4 – Student organised survey dive
Student divers organise their own survey dive integrating techniques necessary for their particular area/survey and presenting results of the dive. (Results obtained on this final dive would have no initial value beyond demonstrating mastery of skills learned throughout the course). This may be carried out over more than one dive depending on size and complexity of dive site.

Course Dates

Eco-Survey Diver courses are programmed for the following weekends. A course may not run on a given weekend due to e.g. Instructor avialability, student numbers on the course being to low.

21-22nd March, 4-5th April, 18-19th April, 2-3rd May, 16-17th May, 30-31st May, 13-14th June
